Fer López

I’ve kept Q on this thread because like @Wolf316 i think I’ve made my opinions on Lopez pretty obvious! LOL! I am over the moon it looks like we are keeping him for this season and I can’t wait to see him linking up with the likes of Mane, Jimmy, Roddy, Saïd and even Armstrong! Suddenly we will have a team hopefully full of players trying to make things happen instead of last seasons limited, pedestrian dross!

The second he dawdled around at Leeds & did not even attempt to track back he sealed his own fate.
After the assist of the season you mean?…that game? That’s the problem, he was in the team to do just that and all most on here focussed on was his lack of defending! Maybe, just maybe, if we had persisted with him then the defensive side of his game would have improved?… Oh and we would probably have scored more goals with him in the side….because Hwang, Munetsi and Bellegarde were so much better options eh?!

Doesn't matter the season was lost. He obviously had a great half season at Celta and that has helped him and the club more than anything he was going to do in the premier league with that bull**** worthless squad and vaguely handsome manager.

Looks like he's going to be at Wolves this season, so let's see the club reap what they have sown with him.

That’s why he won’t survive in the English leagues

Yikes, one poor moment in one game was enough to seal his fate? In an otherwise atrocious team performance (in which incidentally Lopez got an assist)? That's an indictment on our two managers as much as anything. You do have to display some patience with youngsters.

Iv not wrote him off but that loser mindset has to change

Never give up and always chase your man

Last season is in the past time for a clean slate

If he doesn’t start season well I doubt he will make it in the English leagues confidence is everything in football you either have it or you don’t

You mean that loser mind set the whole squad displayed for 35 out of 38 league games last year.
Perhaps his cameo and assist upset the group standards being set..

Indeed...but you're talking to the mixers! Some appear to have already selected a scapegoat if things don't go well. :)

That’s right they need to not look for relegation hangover excuses

Yet Channy could constantly give the ball away and still get picked. Anyway looks like it’s Rob who sealed his own fate and now we’ve got a manger who’ll actually want to win games.
I am no Hwang fan either. Not selling him to Marseille for £21M is up there with the biggest mistakes Shi made.

Last season Fer Lopez did not track back enough, and by not working hard enough gave goalscoring opportunities to leeds, everton and sunderland. In those matches he was subbed on for two of them so was fresh.

Whereas Hwang gave away several actual goals and was still selected.

Really couldn't give a toss about him not trackng back enough, the reason he didn't play much was because he was too easily knocked off the ball, he wasn't ready for the physicality of English football 10 months ago. Hopefully he will be now, he's a talented kid who could thrive with a bit more resilience under his belt. The Trincao comparison is a good one.

Don't get me started on hwang. Hopefully hwang will go to crystal palace where matt hobbs is.

Peak Molineux Mix, writing a 21-year old off because he didn't track back in one of the nine occasions he got minutes in his first season in English football.

It took Robert Pires a season of first team football, in which he was often criticized for histrionics and being brushed off the ball too easily, to adapt to the intensity of English football.

Our 'supporters' expectations are absurd at times. It was the same with Arias. It wasn't their fault our owner decided he didn't need a recruitment team or director of football and replaced all of our goals with players who needed time to bed in.

Hallelujah and Amen to that my friend! Somebody speaking sense! Great post! Can’t wait to see Fer in a Wolves shirt again!

Shame our so called fantastic man manager didn’t show Fer the same love he showed others instead he couldn’t wait to get rid of him.

My personal opinion on Fer (for what it’s worth), is should he stay (which I don’t think is nailed on) all parties involved need to leave the past in the past. Both sides made mistakes as he was the wrong player at the wrong time for him and the club so it’s now a clean slate and it’s up to him to show what he can do and it’s up to coaching staff to give him the best opportunity to do so. Ultimately I doubt either him, his team, our management or our club want him to fail.

I think the thing that this thread seems to ignore (maybe because it never happened) is that I imagine that the first thing Edwards did when he arrived was to ask the players who was up for a relegation battle and really wanted to be here. Fer had decided no (maybe he never really wanted to come and it's just another Mendes cattle market job anyway) and consequently Edwards gave him roughly one game worth of minutes, same as Pereira had before he arrived.

Could be that Fer thought Edwards was a complete chancer and thought he'd be better off nowhere near that joke of a manager.

Well it could be, but André seemed happy to stay and play under him. Obviously it's impossible to know and people's guesses will likely fit their agendas. Maybe it was Edwards' job to sell him the club rather than ask him neutrally, but I don't think the early months at the club can have been easy, God knows what was going on under Pereira.

He did, but the Champo is more physical still. If he wasn't ready for the Prem, what makes you think he'll thrive in the Champo?
The Championship is not more physical than the Premier League. The quality is lower and it’s misinterpreted as more physical but it isn’t. The majority of the Premier League players are supremely fit and strong athletes, and because of its position as a top league, these players are some of the fittest and strongest in Europe, and probably world football. The Championship? Not so much.
I will accept it’s physically demanding as it’s still recognised as a top European league despite it being our second tier, and is much more physical than La Liga.

As you say, very unlikely any of this actually happened

Looking forward to him getting another chance next season assuming he stays - I don't feel as though I've seen anywhere near enough to properly judge this kid either way.

Given his reported talent i would assume that basing ourselves around him, Mane, Jiminez etc will lead to more exciting moments than we saw last season!

I think it'll be 50/50 on him staying though......surely he'll want to go back to Spain if he's getting regular minutes in la liga.

Agendas indeed.

This has to be the season for R. Gomes and Lopez.

We're going to be a completely different team in terms of we will dominate possession, have more attacks and be allowed to make more mistakes.

In hindsight, we shouldn't have signed either of them as a Premier League club, because they're not suited to it. It's as though we did it because that's how we thought it should be done. That's what Brighton do, that's what Bournemouth do, but we forget those clubs have actual plans in place and outline a clear vision for them.

Lopez should have had a year or two training with Cunha and then be ready to become the main man. I know they're not similar players, but we could ease him in with Cunha doing the business on the pitch.

What were we even doing with R. Gomes? Was he signed as a wing-back? Probably as that's where he played for Estoril, but he hasn't had a proper run in that position in two years, despite it being a massive problem position for us this season.

We've basically stumbled across Mane. Vitor can claim he rated him but he hardly used him, and thankfully Edwards did give him a chance, but we were effectively down.

So relegation is a positive for those three and I think we've got to build around them. It's more luck than judgement, but a year in the Championship is what all three of them need for their careers IMO, and hopefully they return to the Premier League with us in 12 months as completely different players.

Do you really think he would have asked the players who was happy to stay, given the battle that was ahead when he arrived and the almost certain relegation when the transfer window opened? He did say that he only wanted those players around and let's face it, it's pretty obvious there were several who wanted out with Pereira. I'd be amazed if anyone took over as manager in those circumstances and didn't speak one to one with all the first team squad to ask where they were at.
