Fer López

This is why we should not have loaned him to Celta Vigo in the first place. It was always going to be problematic, and they were neve going to have the money.

We must stand firm on this though.

I'm hopeful Peixoto will make him the number 10 and he enjoys the new style, as he clearly wasn't fancied by Edwards despite claims they would look at him this pre-season.

If he doesn't though, and still wants to leave, we can't give him to Celta Vigo again. They're never going to pay £15-20m and unless he is truly outstanding to attract interest from the real elite, we'll just be in the same position where they want him on loan again in 12 months.
It wouldn’t be that much though, would it? It’s rare we (or indeed any club) pays a fee in full. I’d say we were paying the fee over 4 years, so we’ve probably only paid a year so far. So it wouldn’t cost them much to get him back in real terms, I just think they’re being chancers on it

Pre season best player by a mile.

When he then played in the season he was one of our only creative players which we desperately needed. Judging him by the limited minutes he had on the pitch for us.

Guessing you preferred Munetsi?
He was vastly under used last season of that there’s no doubt. However judging a player on pre season games is madness to me. There’s zero pace and intensity in them to replicate an EPL game, it’s comparing night and day

Absolutely not, Munetsi is terrible and has no technical ability at all. That does not apply to Fer Lopez and you're right when you say he was our best player in Pre Season last Summer but that was a very very low bar. The competitive games he played in were underwhelming though for me. I really do hope the rest of you are correct about him being a quality 8 or 10 in the Championship and we come back to this in January and I hold my hands up and say I got this one massively wrong as it would solve a good portion of our creativity issues and save us having to spend money on the position.

Not a chance was he one of the best players on the pitch in the minutes he has with us and I am gobsmacked you are trying to suggest he was . He did have relatively few minutes in the grand scheme of things but in the time he did have he was very underwhelming.
Not as underwhelming as our team performances in 35 league games last year.

He so sorely missed a player who progressed the ball with forward passing or taking a man on. On the ball, he reminds me of Sarabia - fantastic quality. I hope he can mature into a key asset for us next season, as he'd be technically one of the best in the league.
Reminded me a bit of Martin Odegaard. He has the potential to be top quality if used correctly.

He's prominently featured in today's pre-season snaps on the official site and it makes sense to give him every opportunity to see if it can work both ways.

If we were being linked with a young, technically gifted and forward-thinking player with potential, many on here would be very happy. In this case we may already have what we need so let's continue getting him integrated with the squad and take it from there. If we're wrong then we may have to look afresh options in January... and also splash some cash which is an option the Portsmouths and Millwalls may not have.

Sounds like a plan to me but then I'm a simple creature.

I'd be more than happy for those 3 to stay. Add depth and provide more quality that we had last season. Also requires three less sets of outgoings and incomings, which can only be beneficial for the "rebuild"
And Doyle is HG

The “normal” season compared to pre-season is much faster & more physical, its that he couldnt cope with.
He needs to work harder.
& no, i dont want to see Munetsi in a Wolves shirt again.

Agreed. I was desperate for him to do well but, aside from a few sporadic moments, he was too weak and never tracked back.

Undoubtedly has the talent though, so a year in the Championship in (hopefully) a dominant team could be exactly what he needs.

Hey Rob was more than happy to play Channy and Angel Gomes who were both utter gash. Fer’s face didn’t fit with runaround Rob and that was the problem.

Who is on the top right

He’s up to 53 pages and beginning to feel like a cheaper version of Fabio Silva, returning, promising to deliver then finding that despite his evident talents there isn’t anyone else out there who actually wants to buy him and he isn’t yet hard enough to do the yards required in English second tier football

Last season, for Celta, who want him, but not enough to pay his full wages or a fee, he played 17 games. 1 goal, 1 assist
Featuring occasionally for Spain U21

He’s a promising youngster, a bit like Rodi Gomez but with far less experience or determination. I’d love him to come good but don’t see him as a player who will be first pick in his position ( whatever that might be ).

Where do we think he plays in a 4231?

I’d had him pegged as the 10, would that mean Mane playing wider?
Could he play a midfield alongside Andre? Or is he the wide right player we’re missing??

I fully support the new manager looking at and deciding on Fer himself, rather than leaving him at Celta. However, I don't think he'll thrive in the Championship which is more physical than the Premier League. He just looked lightweight and slow when I saw him play and for me was a huge disappointment last season. He wasn't the only one, ofc.
I hope that I'm wrong and that Fer is the number 10 (or whatever the latest phrase is), that we've been searching for, but can't see it based on his disappointing season in the Prem.
He's certainly got some skill, but he needs to be quicker, quicker of thought and stronger, so unless he's radically changed over the last 6 months, we may continue to think he's another Mendes favour.

Would be a brave team.
(ps. Think I’d prefer Rodrigo on the left)
I agree tbf

Andre needs someone with creativity and drive next to him he needs to be left to be thst enforcing 6 breaking up play and looking after that back 4

Think Lopez can do thst 8 role better than Doyle

Who knows he may shove mane on the right or left and Lopez in the 10

Having like 2 10s

Like I said, my instinct is Lopez as the middle of the 3. Not like a second striker more an 8/10. Similar to how MGW plays for Forest.

But he did play a deeper role on loan last season, so that’s obviously an option.

He admitted himself he wasn’t ready for the physicality of the premier league unfortunately our idiot of a manager didn’t give him the game time to help him acclimatise to it.

Obviously I am not a manager/coach but what I struggle with is that we have someone who performs well enough in a top 6 team in one of the top 2/3 European leagues and is wanted by them permanently and seemingly loved by their fans but can't get a game for the worst team in the Premier League.

I know he is lightweight but is that not a poor reflection of the management we have had that they haven't seen fit to use him.

Moving forward is this not exactly the kind of young and progressive player we should be looking to build around?

The lad clearly has talent and if we're intending on playing on the front foot, creative players like him can be very useful. Give him the game time and make him feel wanted and he'll be okay. That means we might have to resist a pile on when he inevitably makes the odd error.

He did, but the Champo is more physical still. If he wasn't ready for the Prem, what makes you think he'll thrive in the Champo?

I did hear (rumour from the pub) that some players that were adamant on leaving whilst RE was here have since changed their mind I think Cesar has been in contact with ones he wants to stay.

Can't be true. We were told the players were outraged RE was sacked :D

Championship really isn't more physical than the PL. Rougher? maybe, but you have to be stronger and more athletic to compete in the PL than the Championship. Think Lopez would be fine as long as he can handle the occasional kick

The playing style in the Premier League is often characterized by fast-paced, high-skill action with an emphasis on flair and creativity. In comparison, the Championship is known for its more physical and gritty style of play, where endurance and resilience are crucial.

Anyway, don't want to get into a debate about the Prem Vs Champo as this is a Fer Lopez thread.

The championship is not more physical. It's myth so people can say it isn't as bang average as it is.

What a load of *******s that article is.

Always blame someone else, the kid himself admitted he wasn’t ready, it’s that maturity that gives me hope he’ll put the work in and make himself a prominent part of the squad.

Alternating with Doyle seems the likeliest scenario to me. We need a bigger squad for the 46-game season ahead, so I would be reluctant to let any midfielder go. We need a number of systems to negotiate a long season, so Fer can be integrated.

Not sure I'd be citing a source that feels the need to say the difference between the PL and the Championship is that the PL doesn't have promotion battles!

It was Edwards himself who said they’ve sent him out to get game time. Of course Rob could have just given him some here but chose not to

Yeah good move, he got far more minutes at Celta than he would have in the Premier League, hopefully will give him a foundation for a decent promotion winning championship season. Will Fer fancy it, we’ll see.

If we’d paid £7-8M for him, fair enough, but we had our pants taken down….again.
He has some talent, but doesnt work hard enough & doesnt understand that he has to play for the team for 90 mind when the opposition are trying to stop you! he is not a £21M (or whatever we paid for him) talent, at the moment.
If he develops, he might be, & i hope the new boss can unlock that, but he isnt a starter yet. By a long way.

Good enough to start for the 6th best team in La Liga but not good enough to start in the championship?

You earn game time with performances, you don't get given it, when he played he didn't perform.

And yes I am aware that applies to most of the squad before anyone says it, but if you have the quality it will shine through, just like it did with Mane.
